Trinity Twins | 2022/23

Trinity Twins is an interactive film installation about nuclear culture. Natural background radiation and other sources of radioactivity transform documentary scenes from personal nuclear encounters in real-time. Each atomic interaction is releasing the film from the constraints of linear narration introducing a quantum cinema of perilous probability.

Quantum Cinema of Perilous Probability (AND ULTIMATE UNCERTAINTY)

In 1999, I began to explore the cultural quality of radioactivity. This journey took me to Chernobyl, Geneva, Fukushima, Hiroshima, Vienna, Paranal, Karlsruhe, Haigerloch and finally Hechingen, my birthplace and headquarters of the German uranium project at the end of World War II.

My new filmic installation “Trinity Twins” documents cinematic scenes of this fleeting acquaintance with the primordial nuclear force. The omnipresent cosmic radiation, measured with a Geiger-Müller counting tube, rearranges cinematic elements in real time and transforms them into “kinematic isotopes”. Each iteration is releasing the filmic documents from the constraints of linear narration introducing a quantum cinema of pure probability.

Thus, scenes of my work “Before Sunrise” with the Slovenian music group Laibach show the last days of the earth’s pristine atmosphere. In 1945, the German nuclear reactor experiment B8 in a cave in Haigerloch triggers a chain of unpredictable events: 664 uranium cubes on chains wait for criticality above a reactor pool filled with heavy water. Directly above this reactor, on a rock, is a church. The name of this church is Trinity, just like the name of the very first atomic bomb, which detonates shortly thereafter on July 16, 1945, in the desert Jornada del Muerto, the Dead Man’s Path, in New Mexico.

This first atmospheric nuclear explosion is the day zero of the infossil epoch, the beginning of the transformation of the atmosphere into the atomsphere, the context in which humanity, through the application and aspired mastery of atomic processes, begins to create a new planetary environment through the transmutation of matter, machines, minds and money. In the cave in Haigerloch humanity leaves her first cave painting, painted with radioisotopes on the canvas of time.

It is the beginning of the epoch, which has recently been assessed as sustainable. A foolish assessment, just consider the current situation 2022 in Ukraine, where nuclear power plants are being held hostage at war without any accountability for radiation safety being addressed, a mere 3 weeks following the declaration of nuclear sustainability by the European Union.

It is time to take hold of our privilege to renounce.

Trinity Twins ist eine interaktive Filminstallation, in der Radioaktivität dokumentarische Szenen meiner nuklearen Reisen in Echtzeit spaltet.

Quantenkino der gefährlichen Wahrscheinlichkeiten

Im Jahre 1999 begann ich, die kulturelle Qualität der Radioaktivität zu erforschen. Diese Reise führte mich unter anderem nach Tschernobyl, Genf, Fukushima, Hiroshima, Wien, Paranal, Karlsruhe, Haigerloch und schließlich Hechingen, meinem Geburtsort und Hauptsitz des Uranprojekts Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs.

Meine neue filmische Installation „Trinity Twins“ dokumentiert filmische Szenen dieser flüchtigen Bekanntschaft mit der nuklearen Urkraft. Die allgegenwärtige kosmische Strahlung, gemessen mit einem Geiger-Müller Zählrohr, ordnet filmische Elemente in Echtzeit neu an und transformiert diese in „kinematische Isotope“.

So zeigen Szenen meiner Arbeit „Vor Sonnen-Aufgang“ mit der slowenischen Gruppe Laibach die letzten Tage der nuklear unberührten Erdatmosphäre. Im Jahre 1945 löst das deutsche Kernreaktor-Experiment B8 in einer Höhle in Haigerloch eine Kette unberechenbarer Ereignisse aus: 664 Uranwürfel an Ketten warten über einem mit schwerem Wasser gefüllten Reaktorbecken auf Kritikalität. Direkt über diesem Reaktor befindet sich auf einem Felsen eine Kirche. Der Name dieser Kirche ist Trinity – Dreifaltigkeit, genau wie der Name der allerersten Atombombe, die kurz darauf am 16. Juli 1945 in der Wüste Jornada del Muerto, der Pfad des Toten, in New Mexico detoniert.

Diese erste Atmosphärische nukleare Explosion ist der Tag Null der infossilen Epoche, der Beginn der Transformation der Atmosphäre in die Atomsphäre, der Kontext, in dem die Menschheit durch die Anwendung und angestrebte Beherrschung atomarer Prozesse beginnt, eine neue planetarische Umgebung durch die Transmutation von Elementen, Maschinen, Gedanken und Geld zu schaffen. In der Höhle in Haigerloch hinterlässt sie ihre erste Höhlenmalerei, gemalt mit Radioisotopen auf der Leinwand der Zeit.

Es ist der Beginn der Epoche, die seit Kurzem als zukunftsfähig und nachhaltig taxiert wird. Ein törichtes Konzept, man denke nur an die aktuelle Lage in der Ukraine, wo Atomkraftwerke in Geiselhaft genommen werden, ohne dass eine Verantwortlichkeit für die Strahlensicherheit auch nur benannt werden kann, und das nur 3 Wochen nach der Erklärung der “Nachhaltigkeit”.

Es ist an der Zeit, das Privileg des Verzichts als solches zu begreifen.
